Description : The Black Redstart is a small brownish-black passerine with a rufous tail (length 15 cm, weight 16 g, wing 8.7 cm, bill 1.5 cm, tarsus 2.5 cm, tail 6 cm approximately). The male is visibly different from the female. The male looks black from above and the front. Its forehead, ear-coverts, lores, sides of the neck, chin, throat and breast are black. It has a dark slaty mantle, back and wings and a rufous lower breast, belly and sides to its tail. The female looks dusky brown from above and pale fulvous-brown below. It has a rufous-orange wash on its flanks and belly, and rufous sides to its tail. It feeds mainly on insects, especially small beetles. It breeds in May-August in the Himalayas.
